Michael R. Mendez (FIU, BA, '03)
President and Founder of Maverick Advisors, a boutique-consulting firm. Maverick Advisors specializes in business development and raising capital for companies that are start-ups or are restructuring and focuses on alternative investment opportunities. Currently, the firm is working on projects that include ethanol, a tween girl shoe line, and restaurant ventures with Wal-Mart, along with some commercial and residential real estate opportunities. Mr. Mendez is an active member of the philanthropic community and utilizes his expertise to consult clients in the area of charitable foundation development and management. His philanthropic and civic involvements include serving as Director for The Beacon Experience, A Foundation for Success, Director of The Dwayne Johnson Rock Foundation, Founder of "The Rock Toy Chest," Co-founder and Director of the JUNTOS Foundation, Cabinet member of the Mercy Hospital Emergency Department Fund Raising Committee, and Member of the host committee for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in April 2008. He is also President of the Costa Foundation Inc., named in memory of his uncle Carlos Costa, a pilot for Brothers to the Rescue. The Costa Foundation supports South Florida organizations focusing in the area of human rights, education and healthcare. Mr. Mendez is a graduate of Florida International University with a bachelor’s degree in history. He joined the FIU Foundation Board of Directors in May 2007, has been a member of the FIU Alumni Association Board of Directors since 2005, and is a cabinet member of the FIU College of Law. Mr. Mendez currently resides in Miami. |
